A salary benchmark is only useful if you know what it is measuring. Three things decide whether a published number is signal or noise.
Sample size
A median drawn from six data points is an anecdote. Look for the sample count next to any range, and treat anything under about twenty submissions as directional only.
Currency basis
Pay quoted in USD for a role paid in naira or shillings hides exchange-rate risk. Always check which currency the contract is written in, not just the headline figure.
Seniority definitions
"Senior" means five years at one employer and twelve at another. Compare scope — team size, budget ownership, on-call responsibility — rather than titles.
