Hiring volumes across African tech cooled sharply from the 2022 peak, but the shape of demand matters more than the total. Across the employers we track, three patterns hold.
1. Senior hiring never really stopped
Companies trimmed graduate and junior intake first. Roles at lead and staff level, especially in payments infrastructure and risk, stayed open for longer and were filled more slowly.
2. Hybrid settled as the default
Fully remote postings peaked and then fell back. Most large employers in Lagos, Nairobi and Cape Town now advertise two or three office days as standard.
3. Finance and compliance grew fastest
As licensing tightened across markets, compliance, treasury and internal audit became the fastest growing functions at fintech employers.
